About Palabrio
Palabrio is a Telegram bot for saving words and phrases and practicing them in the same chat. This page lists what you can do, using the same menu names and buttons as in the bot. Learning happens in Telegram β send /start to the bot. This website also has a short home page and public pages for shared word lists.
Getting started
Send /start. The bot asks a few setup questions, then you can add words.
- Bot language: π¬π§ English or π·πΊ Π ΡΡΡΠΊΠΈΠΉ.
- Native language β used to detect the language of a word and to suggest translations. Tap a button, or send a language name or code (for example Turkish, tr).
- First learning language. You can add more later in Settings.
- Timezone β reminders and do-not-disturb use local time. Send a city (Madrid, New York, Moscow) or a zone name (Europe/Madrid, UTC). Skip is available.
- Do-not-disturb start and end as HH:MM (24-hour), for example 22:00 and 08:00. Skip leaves quiet hours unset.
A short how-to follows. Tap β Continue. Then tap β Add word or type a word in the message.
Adding words
From the main menu, tap β Add word, or type a word or phrase while you are not in another flow. You can send text in your native language or in a language you are learning.
The bot looks the item up, suggests a translation, and usually adds usage examples. You can confirm as-is, tap βοΈ Edit translation and send a new one (comma-separated for alternatives), Change languages, or Remove word. When you are finished, tap Done.
If the usual dictionary form is different from what you typed, the bot may offer Use Β«β¦Β». Keep original saves what you typed. If several readings are possible, you pick one.
If the word looks like your native language, the bot asks which language to translate into. With one learning language you can tap Always use plus that language so the choice is remembered; change it later in Settings β Learning languages.
You can send several items in one message, one per line (up to 25). Out of a list, the bot asks whether to Create a list, Add to an existing list (lists you own or edit), or Add to my vocabulary. Inside a list, the lines go to that list. You get one summary; other list members get their own summary. If you named a source language, lines that are not in that language are skipped.
After the first save, the bot says it will send a short practice in chat later. Done returns to the main menu, or to the list if you added words there.
Train
Main menu β π― Train starts a practice session when you want one. You do not have to wait for a reminder. A session is up to about ten cards.
Each card asks you to translate between the two languages of that word, for example: Translate from English to Spanish: and the prompt in quotes. Type your answer in the chat.
- Skip β leave this card for later without treating it as a wrong answer.
- I don't know β show the expected answer.
- Remove from vocabulary β drop this word from your study queue (you confirm first).
- Β« Main menu β leave the session.
After you answer, the bot may say β Correct!, that a typo is close enough, that the meaning matches the stored translation, that you answered in the wrong language, or β Not quite with the expected answer. The session ends with Session complete and a review count.
Automatic practice messages
When a word is due, the bot can send a practice message in the chat β same translation prompt as Train. Reply when you can.
A newly added word is not used for an automatic reminder for about three hours. Train has no such wait: you can practice a new word immediately.
On a reminder you also get Postpone. Choose 15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, or Tomorrow. The bot confirms with an approximate next time.
If you leave a reminder unanswered, the next one waits about six hours. If that continues for about a week, automatic reminders pause until you use the bot again (open a menu, add a word, or train).
Reminders respect do-not-disturb, your timezone, and Notification sound in Settings. They are also held back while you are in the middle of another bot flow (for example adding a word).
If nothing is due, the bot may ask Want to practice a few more words anyway? with Yes, practice or No, thanks.
If your vocabulary is empty, you may get up to three nudges, a little more than four days apart, with Add word and Main menu. Copy depends on whether setup is finished.
How review timing works
Each word has its own schedule (spaced repetition). The bot shows a word more often after a miss and less often after you remember it, so practice spreads out instead of repeating the same items every day.
- After a miss, the word typically comes back in about ten minutes.
- After the first correct answer, the next review is about one day later.
- After the next correct answer, about six days later.
- Further correct answers stretch the gap to a couple of weeks, then around a month, and longer if you keep remembering the word.
These are typical waits, not a promise of an exact clock time. π Stats shows an approximate next reminder (Next push: soon, in minutes, hours, or days).
My words
Main menu β π My words lists your cards, newest first. Tap one to see the word, translation, language pair, and usage examples. Remove deletes that card from your vocabulary (you confirm). Use βΉ Prev / Next βΊ when there are many words.
Words from lists you paused with βΈ Stop learning do not show here and do not count in Stats.
Shared lists
Main menu β π My lists is for vocabulary you share with friends, a class, or a group. β Create list, then send a name (1β100 characters).
On a list, π Share sends a Telegram invite for the learner role: view words, practice, rename the list for yourself. Learners cannot add, edit, or remove words. If you want others to edit, use βοΈ Editors β Send a link. That editor invite works once. You can also promote someone already on the list (From existing members).
- owner β created the list; can manage members and editors.
- editor β add words, edit translations, remove words for everyone.
- learner β practice only; cannot change the shared words.
Owners and editors can β Add word on the list (or type while looking at that list) and π Add from my words to move a personal card onto the list. Your progress on that word is kept; other members get their own copy to learn.
βοΈ Rename can apply For everyone or For me only. β©οΈ Use shared name drops your personal name. π Words browses entries; editors can Remove for everyone (the word leaves every member's copy).
βΈ Stop learning pauses reminders and Train for this list only. Words and progress stay saved. βΆοΈ Resume learning turns them back on. Teachers can still add words while learning is paused.
Notify about new words can be on or off per list. When someone else adds a word, you may get Learn this, Already know (drops it from your queue only; the shared list is unchanged), or Mute new words.
π Delete for me removes the list from your account and your copies of its words. The list stays for other members.
Each list also has a public web page at /list/β¦ (Russian: /ru/list/β¦) with the name, words, translations, and examples. Learn in Telegram opens the bot join flow. After you join, the bot explains Main menu β π― Train and when to expect an automatic reminder.
Stats
Main menu β π Stats shows when you joined, word counts by language pair, how many are ready to review, and an approximate next reminder. Counts skip words from lists you paused.
Settings
Main menu β βοΈ Settings shows a summary, then:
- π Bot language β English or Russian for menus and messages.
- π£ Native language
- π Learning languages β add or remove (keep at least one). With a single learning language you can Always use that language as the default target for words in your native language, or clear that default.
- π Timezone
- π Do-not-disturb and Clear do-not-disturb
- Notification sound β on or off for practice and list alerts.
- IPA transcription β on or off next to learning words.
- βΈ Deactivate account β pauses the account; send /start and β Reactivate to continue. Progress is kept.
- π Delete account β permanent. Confirm by sending exactly DELETE.
Help
Main menu β β Help repeats the short how-to: save words with a translation, answer practice messages in chat, start Train yourself, and share lists via My lists. Timezone and do-not-disturb apply if you set them.
